What Poker Chip Material Should You Choose?

Many Americans enjoy poker. Some prefer to play in a casino setting, while others prefer to play at home with their family and friends. The first poker chips were made of gold coins and pieces. The first clay poker chips were made in the late 19th century and early 20th centuries. The chips could be made in any color and any design. Today's poker chips are made of a variety of materials, including ceramic and plastic. Each type of poker chip has its own pros and cons.

Basic-Grade Poker Chips

Supermarket - These are the cheapest poker chips. They're usually found in a set of poker chips for children. These chips are often hard to stack because they aren't well-weighted.

Super Diamond - Super Diamond chips weigh 8.5 ounces more than the "supermarket" ones. These chips are of normal size and can also be hot-stamped to allow for personalization.

ABS Plastic - ABS plastic chips also known as "Dice Chips", because they have a ring of cards suits around their outer edges. These chips are more expensive than traditional "casino" chips, but they are still very good quality.

Faux Clay – Faux clay chips can be expensive for home poker players, but they are not easy to find. These chips stack well and are much less slippery than Super Diamond chips.

Mid-range Plastic and injection-molded Plastic – Mid-range plastic chips are made with a manufacturing process that gives them a soft feel than other plastic chips. They are less slippery that ABS plastic. They are less popular than ABS plastic, but are slightly better quality.

Clay Composite vs. Clay

Clay Composite - Clay-composite chips are one step below casino-grade clay chips. They are manufactured using an injection-molding/compression-molding process. This creates a chip that is very similar to the real thing. Some people claim that you can't tell the difference between a clay chip and a composite one if you are blindfolded. These chips are very popular with home poker players and often have a metal insert that gives them a weighted feel. Composite chips are very similar to clay chips but cost around 30% less.

Clay - The most popular type of chip on the market is clay. Clay chips often contain chalk or sand, which is used to strengthen the clay. These chips are created using compression molding to bond together the materials. Clay chips are often imperfect because they are not mass-produced. These chips are very tactile and have a distinctive "splash", sound. These chips are customizable more than mass-produced chips. They come in many colors, designs, weights, and sizes. These are the most costly poker chips, but they're worth it if you're willing to spend the extra money.
